Endurance Events and Fear

Truth be told, endurance events – a GORUCK, Spartan’s Hurricane Heat and the like – are 100% out of my comfort zone. I am intimidated by them. I’ve successfully completed two Spartan Hurricane Heats and was medically dropped from a GORUCK Tough, a 12ish hour event, somewhere between the 6-8th hour. In each event at some point I told myself that I’m never doing another one of these events again. I was out of my comfort zone. The medical drop really did a number on my confidence, not because of the medical DNF part, but that my physical fitness was not up to snuff.

Spartan Race Hurricane Heat HH-073

The gear list for HH-073 said to arrive by 5:15pm for a 6:00pm start. They key here is the be here by 5:15. We started off with Tony telling us to line up in alphabetical order by first name at about 5:30pm. After we were in line, he said, “Now by last name.” We switched and moved to line up by last name. Our wavers were taken and we were told to go to the firewood near the end of the Spartan Race’s Sprint’s finish line. This was about 5:45pm. The 6:00pm start was a misdirection, as we really started at the line up at 5:30. That set the tone for the Hurricane Heat, expect the unexpected and think outside the box. HH-073.. The list has been received..

This morning I received the Mandatory Items list for the upcoming Hurricane Heat, HH-073, this weekend. Out of the required items, I have to pick up 10lbs of canned goods and a sharpie (the one I have isn’t waterproof). I still have yet to get the butterflies, but I’m sure they will hit Friday morning.

Now I just need to memorize the following…

I will always place the mission first.
I will never accept defeat.
I will never quit.
I will never leave a fallen comrade.

Hurricane Heat is Two Weeks Out

My first entry into Spartan Race’s Hurricane Heat is two weeks out and I am a little nervous and excited at the same time. This will be my biggest challenge to date. I think this will test me more than the Spartan Beast as I am able to go at my own pace and don’t have to worry about teammates (as no one wants to SPARTAN UP with me).

Onward.
