The Trials and Trails of the Monterey Spartan Beast 2014

This is the race I have been waiting for and dreading. 11+ miles of wicked Monterey hills and 25+ obstacles that would push me to my limits and beyond. A few days before the race, I started to get the nervous feeling in my gut. The longest I have ever run at one time was 10 miles and that was only 7 days before the Beast. I knew that I would be able to do the running/jogging part as its not straight 11+ miles thanks to the obstacles. I packed all of my obstacle race gear and a few changes of clothing and readied myself for a trip to sunny California. Two hours of flying and a hour and a half car ride later we arrived at the hotel that was 15 or so minutes away form the race.

The night before the race, my sleep was not very good. I woke up multiple times due to noise and possibly nerves. We found out when we were leaving that the water heating system was recently tuned and we were lucky to hear swishing noises all night in a pattern. Yay. 2014 Rugged Maniac

This was, by far, the most fun mud run I have ever done. It was a little challenging and great practice for the Spartan Beast next week. I’m glad I was able to use my gear for this as I found out that the half gloves that I was planning on wearing are not good to use. Once they get wet, they make everything more slippery and not sticky. The only obstacle that I failed on what the ring swings, mostly due to my hands being extra slippery. Thanks gloves.

Registered for two more races today

What’s the one thing you can count on from a race? A finish line? Bananas? Well, yes, but also flyers for other upcoming races! I found out about the Fire Dash and Zombie Fest. The Fire Dash is a unique obstacle course that is designed to simulate fire fighting situations that benefits the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Double bonus if you ask me.  Then the Zombie Fest, another race that you have to outrun zombies. The Races page has been updated!

2014 Bridge to Brews 10K

April 6th, 2014 – This was my first time running the Bridge to Brews 10k and my first 10k race overall. I was a little worried about being able to finish due to my calf being re-injured during the Shamrock 15k. I thought I was completely healed prior to the Shamrock race, but I guess I didn’t heal 100%. I have a few micro tears that give it a little bit of pain every once and a while sine the 15k. I decided that I was not going to push myself to finish this race and would let my body tell me when it was time to stop running and walk. I did this as I do not want to aggregate the injury any further as I have the Spartan Beast in 2 months that I want to be 100% for.

I met up with a bunch of friends a little before 8am to run the race with then checked into the swanky VIP section (I totally recommend this for the Bridge to Brews race. 1000% worth it!), dropped my bag off and headed to the starting area. As we were getting read to start, I fired up my running apps, Charity Miles, Run Keeper, Nike Running and Zombies, Run! I must be entertained while running! Continue reading 2014 Bridge to Brews 10K
